The Benefits of Drinking Kombucha Tea

When we first moved to the Belleville area our neighbor across the street, who is very much into natural healing and a healthy lifestyle, introduced me to kombucha tea.  She gave me some to try and told me all of the health benefits, I was hooked.  I found a gentleman in the county who sold scobies and I started making my own.  The flavor was never very good, I tried adding a few different kinds of herbal teas to the first ferment, but it was still just something I forced down for the benefits I enjoyed. Gradually I didn’t drink it as much and stopped making it.  I can’t drink a cup of freshly steeped tea whether it’s regular, herbal or green, so I miss out on the benefits that others enjoy from these, which I find very disappointing

This past year at work two of the girls were talking about Kombucha, I had been thinking I was missing it, but the memory of the taste made me hesitate. Then I heard them discussing flavors and second ferment!!!!  What??? Tell me more!  After many informative conversations, I  was excited to get started again. With the offer of a trade, a Mother ( the starter of making Kombucha) for some handmade glass beads, my friend  and I had a deal, and I was back in production!!! I love the trade idea and she has been the best help!

The flow of brewing and fermenting kombucha again was somehow satisfying, but I had a lot to learn about the flavoring this time.  The first batch I flavored half with lemon-ginger, and the other half orange-vanilla. The lemon-ginger was wonderful, not fizzy, but good flavor. The orange-vanilla was disgusting, not fizzy, just disgusting!!!!

This led to more discussions about flavoring and making the tea fizzy. So armed with new ideas I went ahead with two more batches. I ordered Sour Watermelon tea from David’s Tea and added that to the Kombucha for the second ferment, then tried a few different combinations.  The flavors are fantastic!!!!!

If you were wondering about the benefits of Kombucha I will share a few of the ones I enjoy

1. Removes Toxins

Drinking kombucha can aid natural detoxification because it is loaded with enzymes and bacterial acids that bind to toxins and expel them from your body. A particular product found in the fermented tea is glucaric acid, which can help boost the efficiency of your liver’s detoxifying tract. If you are trying to clean out your system, you should try a healthy kombucha.

2. Improves Digestion

If you have an upset stomach, consuming kombucha can help soothe it. Not only does it have enzymes and organic acids, but the fizzy drink is rich in probiotics. Also known as ‘good gut bacteria,’ probiotics promote healthy digestion and provide relief from symptoms associated with diarrhea, constipation, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The tea can also assist in replenishing lost gut bacteria that were depleted over the years by stressing out, drinking alcohol, taking antibiotics, and other harmful factors.

3. Prevents Arthritis

Glucosamine is a potent compound found in kombucha. When consumed, it enhances the production of hyaluronic acid, which helps protect your cartilage and reduce joint pain. If you suffer from arthritic symptoms, you can stave off the ailment thanks to the healthy ingredients in kombucha.

4. Combats Some Cancers

According to the Nature International Weekly Journal of Science, microbiomes are live microorganisms that have anti-cancer properties. Kombucha is packed with microbiomes, which can activate natural cancer-destroying cells and reinforce your own natural defenses against free radicals. Glucaric acid is prevalent in grapefruit, cruciferous vegetables, and kombucha.

These are just a few of the reasons I drink Kombucha, I also love knowing what’s in what I am drinking. There are more uses for Kombucha and as I discover them and try them out I will share.
